Choosing A Suit, How Many Buttons?

Category :

When purchasing a suit it is important to keep in mind your body type and lifestyle as they will be the determining factor in choosing a suit that will make you look your best. Here are some guidelines to help ease the dilemma.

The One Button Suit

This type of avant-garde suit is ideal for those men who have lean frames, but it is important to remember that while considered stylish at the moment the one button suit is not a classic design, hence it could fall out of favour soon. If you own a one button suit remember to fasten the button when standing in order to prevent draping, and unfasten the button when seated.

The Two Button Suit

This is the most classic suit design and is the preferred style of couture tailors on England’s Savile Row. This suit looks good on most men, especially those with short torsos. Only button up the top button leaving the bottom button unfastened while standing, and unfasten both buttons while seated. It is faux pas to ever button up both buttons. The timeless two button suit will never go out of style.

The Three Button Suit

This suit has a 1960’s charm and is ideal for men that are taller than six feet tall because the uppermost button reaches higher on the chest leading to a more aesthetic look. This suit is also the best option if you wish to wear a vest underneath. When seated leave all buttons unfastened, and while standing fasten either the upper two buttons, or just the middle button for a more elegant appearance.
